Strange Timeout Issue

Hi

I am running a Rust server on a dedicated machine running windows server Windows Server 2022 std / Xeon E3-1225 v2 / 16GB RAM / SSD's.

I have several friends who can connect to the server without issue from outside my local network.

I - however - cannot stay connected to my server from any pc on my local network.  It lets me connect for various short lengths of time then I get a timeout error.

I have tried connecting to the game connecting my pc to the hotspot on my phone and there are no issues. It lets me stay connected.
I can connect to any other server without issue, just not the one on my own local network.

Internally and externally I can connect to the server for RDP and network sharing services without issue.

I have resorted to completely wiping my pc and reinstalling windows / rust - this has not solved the issue
Other pc's on my local networt cannot stay connected to the server either - same timout error.

we have tried reinstalling the server's game files  - no success.

Now this server has been running without issue for a long time, and I had no problems connecting to it and staying connected to it.  Nothing changed on the network and nothing changed at either the server or the pc (to my knowlege) - this all occured after a normal forced wipe.

I just went to connect to my server and wasnt able to stay connected.

Has facepunch changed something in order to push selling there own servers thus not allowing people to host a game on a pc at home and play locally ?

i have sent a message to facepunch - and was referred here without any useful suggestions.

Please help !

Have you tried connecting to the external IP instead of localhost?

Have you tried connecting to the external IP instead of localhost?

Your router is probly conflicting somewhere and causing the time outs  r you conncting with connect <local IP here> Or with the external ip

yes have tried a direct connection...
same result...

hi,

ive got a timeout issue going on as well (only with my local connection, external connections from friends are fine). havent got anything to offer.. just seeing if youve had any luck or breakthroughs?

ive kept a log of notes/things ive done. here it is, in case it helps with something

---

I think i started noticing it happening about when i was changing linuxserver config, starting to get linuxserver publicly accessible.. Cant remember exactly what but was probably linuxserver firewall tables and rustserver config. Ive wiped and reinstalled both of these many times, the timeouts happen regardless.

Im sure the timeouts just started kind of suddenly and often. It was often enough that i thought ‘oh i must have a made a bad change with the linuxserver config or rustserver config’

I have noticed that the timeouts will be from 1-4 mins of joining a server. If i dont timeout within a couple minutes itll be fine (had 1 after 15ish mins, but only one in 100s of connections Im tempted to discount it as something else). I have timed out and joined back to the server (straight away without restarting anything) and then been fine.

Ive had rustservers running from my address before, am familiar with server config, never had this issue

Stuff ruled out

Linuxserver

I ran the rustserver locally on my rustgamepc (windows), its behaving exactly the same. So its not a problem with the server itself..

Can rule out linuxserver  (serverhardware and linuxOS)

Modem

Reset modem many times,

tried dns vs static ip (both client requested & assigned by mac),

port forwarding 100% sure correct

Can rule out modem configuration.

Manufacturers Drivers

Formatted rustgamingpc reinstalled windows and let windows update do drivers.

(3 werent updateable by windows update, smbus and 2 others (usb i think), they were installed from a dsim driver backup dism /online /export-driver /destination:"D:\drvbk\")

i wouldnt have suspected them, and no apps were installed alongside them. rule out manufacturers drivers.

Geforce experience wasnt installed, can rule that out.

Windows 11/10 (for the rustgamepc) both behave the same.

PCI network card on rustpc (instead of onboard nic)

Had a lot of timeouts, behaves the same. (tried running rustserver locally and on linuxserver)

Todo

May still be a network issue, have signed up to different interent provider so in a couple days ill get new modem, cables, external ip.

swap machines gamingpc/server and retest. fair bit of effort.. im saving this till last lol

also im about to try running steam in tcp only: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -tcp

yea.. good luck anyway

If your playing the game from the same computer your hosing on use client.connect localhost:port

Mine would always time out trying to connect any other way... however if they are 2 seperate systems you should be able to search for the servers in the server list and connect. What is the exact error your getting when it times you out? What about console logs?

hi, sorry late reply, wasnt logged in.. (also i just realised you might be talking to op.. but anyway)

the problems gone now for me so i cant reproduce  (thankfully lol) it definitley had 'timed out' in the error, i cant remember if it had 'auth' in it (leaning towards nope)

i got a new provider (so new static ip, new modem) (i doubt it was hardware or ip.. but it caused something else to change) and after id set everything up, the problem was gone, never seen it since.. so a shame i didnt get to figure it out.. there was never an entry in the console when i timed out. and i couldnt see anything in the other logs.
