FPS drop / Rubberbanding every couple of seconds.

Hi all, so I'm currently renting a server for rust, they claim they use the latest hardware and so on. They are using the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950x processors

  • 16 Cores and 32 Processing Threads, Updated with 2nd Gen Ryzen Technology Advancements
  • Incredible 4.4 GHz Max Boost Frequency, with a huge 40MB Cache; OS Support Windows 10 64 Bit Edition, RHEL x86 64 Bit, Ubuntu x86 64 Bit; Operating System (OS) support will vary by manufacturer
  • Unlocked, with automatic overclocking via the new Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) feature
  • Quad Channel DDR4 and 64 PCIe lanes, the most bandwidth and I/O you can get on Desktop Processor
  • 180W TDP, CPU Cooler Not Included
  • OS Support: Windows 10; 64 Bit Edition, RHEL x86 64 Bit, Ubuntu x86 64 Bit

I have been getting rubberbanded every couple of seconds, and it's a constant thing, server FPS is very unstable, sometimes it will be at 120fps and drop all the way to like 10fps. When I do the ping command in the rust console it states that my ping is 46! I also have around 5 custom prefabs on map which are not all the big, I also have a total of around 48k entities in game.

The current plugins I'm running on my server are as follows:

any help would be appreciated

How many players do you have online during the FPS drops? I would make enquiries as to what this means: "180W TDP, CPU Cooler Not Included" - if you have no CPU cooling then it will overheat and throttle.

Also, how much RAM do you have and which OS?

Since you mentioned that the lag spikes happen often, it seems it would be fairly expedient to try temporarily unloading some of the plugins to see if the lag spikes continue, which would indicate whether those plugins were significantly contributing to the spikes.

There is also a community member named TheOrXPlays who is developing a sophisticated performance profiler which would be able to tell you nearly instantly which plugin is causing it. It's a premium tool/service which is currently unreleased but he might allow you to use it as a test of the tool's effectiveness. You can find him in the uMod Discord if you want to explore that option.

What's this tool and guy? Can you throw more info on PM or here WhiteThunder... Sounds something good if understand right to track your server performance.

@JimDeadLock

Just me online and the server host uses Linux build, so on rust server browser my server pings go from like 80 to 2000 ping randomly

@WhiteThunder thank you for letting me know I will try and speak with him

ok so i found a solution, If I type o.reload all in the console the rubberbanding stops until server restart, could it be a plugin that is not loading correctly at server restart?

It is certainly possible that a particular plugin may have logic which only caused lag if loaded on server boot, but we can only speculate without more information. Plugins can cause lag for any number of reasons. It really depends on the implementation of the plugin. Some specific plugin may have logic which causes it to lag only under certain circumstances, and those circumstances may have changed due to reloading the plugin or other plugins. The profiler I mentioned would be able to very easily tell you which plugin was causing lag, if you captured a performance profile while the server was lagging.
