Hello, from my understanding there should be some sort of overlay on the map, after I claim land I don't see any type of overlay.

I did follow the image guide, added the folder to my data pack. The images on the HUD bars show up, just nothing on my Map.

Is there an issue if using a custom map?

the map image is deprecated as it is used with the /map command.

The overlay should already show on the in-game map (holding G).

/map is not useful anymore since the in-game map already have mapmarkers to show faction claims and headquarters

Yea, I am aware of that, I am not seeing any map markers, does it not show your own HQ marker? When I open my normal map, no markers basically.

That's odd. I tested last week on a local server (procedural map) and it worked just fine.

Didn't tested with a custom map though. Can you share in private your custom map so I can debug or is this against the map provider ToS?

I sent you my current map. It's procedural with additional monuments. Please feel free to use for testing. I wouldn't think it should make a difference, but you never know.
