When it auto splits, it puts in like twice as much wood as it needs.

I would say that you maybe check your config again. there are multiple options available if I remember correctly. one is the smelting speed the other one is something like fuel usage or similar. Hope I was able to help (if your problem still was occurring)
same problem. using furnace splitter with quicksmelt. Always too much wood left.
