Like/dislike for threadsSuggestion
Are you going to put a like and dislike options on the posts would be nice to see
Care to make the case for it?  Frankly, I'm not sure I see the value.
like is on the other site and been running forums for many years and I know its something everyone will like

If anything, we'd add "Like", but not "Dislike". We removed the Dislike on the old site for a reason.

Neither of these points are arguments.  What is the value of a "Like" button?

Examples:

Facebook has a like button but facebook will moderate the content it shows you based on the number of likes.

Reddit will change the position and relevance (in search results) of posts/threads based on the number of upvotes.

Youtube will recommend videos and change a videos relevance (in search results) based on the number of likes.

Netflix will recommend movies and TV shows and change their position in feeds based on the number of likes.

Problem: none of that applies to this forum

Posts on this forum will always be sequential.  What you see will always be the same, in the same order, regardless of likes or anything else.

I'm not saying yes or no, I'm making an argument against.

I'm more than happy to entertain an argument for a Like button, I just haven't heard one yet.
And you wont get one from me I was only asking if it can be added if you cant be bothered its up to you
Okay, maybe somone else may want to chime in here then, I'm happy to receive feedback.

It's really not about the bother, it's just about the value.
I see value in a 'like' button to show appreciation for one's posts/replies but a 'dislike' button would just introduce an outlet for abuse.
@Death a way to show appreciation.  Good.  Thank you.  I will add some arguments for and against.  Perhaps we can get more feedback.

Arguments For
1. Shows appreciation for poster
2. Status symbol for frequent posters who accumulate a lot of likes
3. Dopemine feedback loop to encourage users to post content that other people "like."

Arguments Against
1. Has no functional value
2. Spams posters with notifications "User liked your post".  May not be a problem for many users, but those who post a lot of "liked" content are getting hammered with useless notifications.
3. Accruing likes doesn't add any value to the site except to give individual users the equivalent of a digital pat on the head.
1. The function is to give members the option to say 'thanks' and for contributors to feel appreciated or perhaps to drive more quality content.

2. Notification setting could be arranged and should be defaulted to disabled. I personally haven't been on a forum platform that notifies when someone likes your content unless you change the setting yourself.

3. Acquiring likes would serve as a 'reputation' supplement to suggest that these users posts are of acceptable quality, and could lay the foundation of an automatic highlight system when a single post reaches a threshold to make the post stand out. A great application to easily find a solution to problems instead of having to mindlessly scroll through pages.

A good example would be John's thread about Trade plugin asking for help regarding deployables destroying nearby when a trade is completed. Tom is late to the party but has a solution, he leaves a reply but it's on the 6th page of the thread. Most users may not likely skim that far for a solution and instead may reply to the thread with the same issue or would just create a new thread.

If Tom's reply received 30 likes, it would then be highlighted or suggested, by means of a tooltip located near the original post and an off-colored reply, so when Jerry has the same issue he can easily spot the highlighted reply from Tom and be on his way.

I dislike the highlighting idea very much as I think that would only add confusion; especially since there are no single threads anymore, just one thread per issue or question so there's unlikely to be many pages per plugin support thread. We are going to have an actual reputation setup, which I don't think "likes" are an adequate method to judge if someone has a positive reputation or not.

I see no issue adding likes, but I also see no value adding them either. It may be something to consider down the line, but certainly wouldn't be a high priority.
Personally I'd be for it if it had some functional value.  While I think @Death made a good suggestion regarding the "highlighting" of liked threads (that would be functional), I don't think that would fit the current forum format.  The given example doesn't really apply anymore given (as Wulf mentioned) each plugin has it's own dedicated support category (as opposed to a single thread like before).  If this were a social network and the order of posts didn't matter, sure.  But, this forum is largely a support supplement, not a popularity contest.
