Smithy confusion and possible issues. Not An Issue

Please explain the Smithy functions.

I set my skills to Smithy 5.

I smelted 100 sulfur ore in a regular furnace. One thing I noted is that, despite having split them evenly 34/33/33, they were not consumed evenly. Unless there's something going on in the background, I didn't think it was very important, but I thought I'd note it.

In addition to that, there was no bonus return. I ended up with 100 cooked sulfur. However, the 83 wood it should have consumed was reduced, leaving me with 54 wood in the furnace (with 38 charcoal). I have not made any changes to the rate or amounts for smelting on my server.

ok it is a "chance" to reduce fuel so by splitting the stacks you are getting a % chance to reduce fuel consumption for each stack. It won't be evenly done because of that.

When looking at the smithy skill more closely I see when I coded it I used it as a % increased per level per item. So at smithy level 5 and default production being 0.10 that will only increase your production amount by .5 meaning for every 1 you'll get half (1/2) of one extra which you can't get so it rounds to 1 so you don't get anything extra. You would have to be level 6 smithy to get 1 extra for each. I see I may need to adjust how this work a good bit and recode this skill a little differently

If I may butt in here, I just started testing this on my test server, and the one thing I noticed was using furnace splitter (in small furnace), the first slot gets the buff, the next two stay at normal speed. I'm at Smithy 2 and am saving a lot more than 20% on fuel, since as soon as the first slot gets empty, I take everything out, close that window, go back in, let Splitter do its thing and I have 50% of my wood left in my inv.

Hence, I'm at a -50% on fuel consumption at level 2 Smithy. Granted, I have to babysit the furnace, to get that, but thought you'd want to know.

I didn't even think about that. I have Furnace Splitter on my server as well. I'm ok with it, since it's requires babysitting, as you say. If my players want to go to that effort, they can sit there. haha

But, on the technical side, all Furnace splitter does is split the resources evenly. It's not doing anything technical regarding the amounts used in the furnace. My point being, couldn't a player accomplish what you're talking about even without Furnace Splitter?

I'd say no, since the first slot is getting the buff from this mod, and smelting really fast. The first time I noticed that slot empty, I thought Splitter had messed up, but it's not doing that on my other two servers. Then when I took everything out, that first time, and put it back in that's when only half the wood was needed. So, I watched it and sure enough, the 1st slot was going super fast.

It may be something on my server. Feel free to test it with say 30 or 90 ores and see if it does the same on your server or not. Let me know.

The way I have XPerience is coded is that anytime fuel is consumed its supposed to give an increase "chance" to reduce the fuel consumption or not consume at all. The higher the Smithy level the greater the chance and less fuel consumption.

That being said, multiple stacks means multiple chances as each stack is consuming fuel. So if you have 5 stacks then that's 5 chances this skill will work..

Hope that clarifies how it could effect how much you save and in fact the skill is greatly improved by doing multiple stacks vs single stack.

OK that makes sense! So, one could end up having more than one slot going faster than the rest. Once I get to a great furnace, I'll have to really watch for that! Thank you!

Yes that would be the case. Same goes for anything that consumes fuel including grills and lights. With grills it also increases that chance for more food when cooked so that effects how much meat you get per stack. Having 5 stacks of meat in a grill greatly increase the chance for more food than a single stack.
