Setting up Rust server with dynamic IP address?

Hi.

im currently running a server 24/7, and the ip is dynamic so it changes every 12 hour so people can't add it to favourite or connect with rust+ because you gotta reconnent rust+ everytime it changes ip...

im wondering how to setup the server so it will save to favourite and rust+

is DDNS something i can use?

Hello, you can use noip or similar, don't forget to forwarding port

i have an asus router with ddns thingy, and i can choose no-ip on that, but is it enough to just make a host name with no-ip?

do i need to make a config in batch file that links to the domain name?

You cannot use domains for Rust servers, only IPs so get a static IP or use a static IP as proxy to your dynamic IP?
It's not enough to just have the ddns set up, you also need to ping it from your server to check/update the IP. If you check the support pages there you should find examples of scripts that can do the ping, then you set it up to run however often you want via a cron job. I use cloudns.net, they have a nice collection of scripts for this.

12-hour IP changes is pretty extreme though. I've had a few ISPs over the years and they usually have 2-4 week cycles.

Example of cloudns.net setup instructions for DDNS on Linux server:

idk how often my isp changes ip but it does it pretty often because the server disappears from favourite almost every day...

So is Proxy better than ddns?

also did some googling and i can use VPN with dedicated ip but i guess i could just rent a server then x)

I tried using NO-IP and i setup a ddns but how do i make my server use that host name?
you can rent a cheap VPS(1 core, 1gb ram) and install your own VPN on it(eg. wireguard). just make sure you have low ping with that VPS :)
noip work fine for me Misticos...

I can join the server with IP or noip.domain...

Yes, but you can't favorite a domain name last I checked. You'd be favoriting the current resolved IP.

Thanks for the tip

yeah i can join through domain name and ip but it still goes away from favorite when the ip updates ....

so only fix for that is Static IP?

Misticos gave some sage advice. Check his comment. Buy a static proxy IP and forward to it.

Props, that's clever af. I *think* any FQDN would work.
More and more ISP providers are adding filters to prevent dynamic ip's being used this way...
Basically becasue it allows a business to go for a dynamic  ip saving a shed load of money over fixed ip's
they have some sophisticated systems that don't rely on ICMP packt blocking to prevent DDNS and ip proxying....
that said DDNS won't work, since RUST  appears find servers via IP callbacks...
All DNS does is allows a user to resolve a FQDN->ip address...
DDns just does the same but with very low refresh time & detection of the current ip.

But RUST+ is just yet another half assed FP implemented network product....

Well, also its 2months ago - is there any way to fix this?

My Problem is as follows: I restarted my server, that was retired 1 year ago. Set it all up new, and updated everything.

And the next day it was gone from the fav list - and the first two players didnt come back :) you can find the server by name and clientconnect works fine, but it dissappears from fav list, because my ISP changes all IPs everyday by reconnect.

Im on a fritzbox, and i remembered that dynamis dns thingy, which worked fine last year - after i fugured out how to set it up in the router.

Also the server is the same, the userdata was the same etc... it doesnt work anymore - i can NOT imagine, that all those KIDS out there running servers with constant 80 people population all PAY for a static IP adress. That cant be the solution.

Is it really the problem, that those free DDNS providers have poor update rates?

And how can i set up the update frequence in my fritzbox?

I KNOW it worked last year, but doesnt now... Even with a new dyndns domain etc...

HELP ? :D

People with population just get a hosting with protection usually.
