As i put in the plugin, I saw an instant speed-up of furnaces but i am unable to change the speed from this, i change it in the config and it has no effect.

Did you reload the plug in using rcon or the F1 console? If not, do it by typing in one of those o.reload QuickSmelt
You may have configured it, but didn't load it yet.
