Zone Manager Plug-In That Actually Works

Seriously... we need a plug-in that works like Zone Manager used to.  It's been YEARS.  Can we get some devs to work together AND MAINTAIN something like this?

It would be useful to be more specific about what you are looking for it to do.

I mentioned Zone Manager.  Everything that Zone Manager does, but without the bugs and has a maintainer.

So you want the Zone Manager plugin to do what it already does, and you want some bugs to be fixed. Which bugs are your top concern? I can look into them.

Well, the issues go back two years, but if you look here https://umod.org/community/zone-manager that should get you started.  lol
Some flags don't work, when creating a safe zone, once you're out of the zone, players are still stuck in "safe" mode, godpvp doesn't work, etc.  It's a long list.  You sure you're up to it?  lol

When you are asking the community of developers to volunteer their precious time to fix a plugin, you have to consider that those developers may have no interest in the plugin and have already committed themselves to months of untelated work. Not only are you asking developers to set aside their existing priorities to fix issues, but you apparently are also asking the developers to discover and disambiguate what the issues even are. That is a tremendously unreasonable ask, and that approach will achieve no results. You need to meet the developers halfway by clarifying which issues are a priority for you, what the impact of those issues is, and provide detailed steps to reproduce the issues. If all of that is adequately clarified in existing threads, link the specific threads where that info can be found.

Also, when prioritizing, manage your expectations. If you could only get one or two issues fixed, which would they be.

I don't expect that I will fix all the issues. I don't even expect that I will fix any of them, since I first need to understand how to reproduce them, what circumstances and logic make them possible, how to fix them, how to verify that they have been fixed, and I have to think about the rest of the plugin and potential consequences to plugin compatibility. I am primarily responding to this thread so that the community can get more specific information from you. I might work on some of the issues, I might not. Without sufficient information, I definitely will not.

Then I guess it'll sit unmaintained as it has been for years.

That defeatist attitude is pathetic. Work with me and we can figure something out. If your comment is intended to pressure developers to work on it, that will backfire and cause developers to walk away. There is definitely a path forward here, which I have already outlined.

I maintain many plugins unofficially, usually by providing limited fixes for highest priority issues over time. A plugin doesn't necessarily need one active maintainer to get repaired over time. If you wait until one developer is ready to take over a plugin and fix all issues, you will be waiting a long time. If you work with developers to fix issues incrementally, in order of priority, you will see relief much sooner.

I have multiple ongoing projects, some that have taken years, some that haven months, and many upcoming. If you want my help, or the help of similar developers, be more reasonable in your ask.

If it was possible to give you a "like" i would have given you one,

not gonna comment on the pointless badgering going on above but will say the plug is broke & dev has obv dropped support making it a uselss mod not unlike a lot on this site

If you are referring to me repeating myself, moderators removed multiple posts by other people in this thread, so my responses don't make sense without those missing posts. Basically the original poster wanted developers to go look through dozens of posts and fix them everything. I was simply asking them to help me help them by specifying which they would fixed and in which order, since it may take time to fix them all. I frankly don't understand why that would be met with resistance.

dont give af about ur arguments with someone else - the plug is broken with tons of refs to the probs in the forum for it just like many other plugs. its dumb to argue about it. you can see the probs in the forums like evrybody else can. dont sit there & tell me you can see a horse with one leg & dont understand why it cant race. im out

I am not intending to argue. I am intending to facilitate solutions. I am asking him, and you, since you appear to have interest in the Zone Manager plugin be fixed, to be specific about what you would like to be fixed, and to tell me which issues are your highest priority. In exchange, developers will be more likely to volunteer their time to fix those issues.

A lot of the existing Zone Manager threads do not have a lot of detail, and don't specify the relative importance of those issues compared to the other issues. Given a large quantity of issues, and limited time to investigate/resolve them, and limited time of developers on this site, it's only logical for the people affected by the issues to spend some time aggregating the information to lower the barrier to entry for a developer to make progress on the issues.

All I am doing in this thread is looking at the situation, of people describing their experience about a plugin having many issues and not seeing it worked on by anyone, and I'm offering insights from a developer's perspective on how you can motivate volunteer developers to work on the issues. Most of my statements in this thread are in agreement with the other posters, but serve to temper their expectations. I am saying Zone Manager can be fixed, and I can be a part of that process, but it will take time, and will take collaboration with you all to maximize effectiveness.
