I deletied the entire section of the config regarding the GUI button, saved changes and reloaded the plugin.   It comes right back!!!  How do I get rid of it forever?

The backpack GUI is not on by default. You have to grant a permission to display it to users. Simply revoke the permission. You may need to reload the plugin after.
